Minimum Equipment Needed for Recording
This is the minimum equipment needed when recording an episode, whether solo or as the host or guest for an interview.
- Microphone
- Headphones (wired preferred to avoid delay)
- Computer or phone
You don’t need anything fancy. Something as simple as the headphones with inline mic that came with your iPhone works fine. It is more important to have some kind of microphone and headphones rather than go without. Do not use the built-in speakers or microphone on your computer to record!

Be a Good Host or Guest: Recording Tips
- Always use a microphone and headphones.
- If recording using an online service like Zoom, consider using a wired connection instead of a wireless connection. Connect your computer via an ethernet cable to your router or modem for a more stable connection.
- If the host is recording multi-track in Zoom, DO NOT MUTE YOUR MIC. Muting your mic will temporarily stop your recording and cause the timelines to be off between the tracks. Turn away from the mic to cough or make a noise. Extra noises on your track will be taken care of in post-production editing.
- Check your body. Make sure your hair will not rub on the mic and that your earrings or clothing will not cause extra noise. Avoid fidgeting that might be picked up by your microphone, like tapping on your desk or clicking a pen.
- Check your environment. Record in a quiet location where you are less likely to be interrupted. Turn off fans and be aware of your A/C or heat vents. Use pillows or blankets or rugs if needed to cover hard surfaces that could cause an echo.
- Stay within 6-8″ of your microphone. That’s a cell phone length, give or take, for quick reference.
- Optional: Use a pop filter for your microphone. Check our podcasting pics on Amazon for a recommendation.
